What is Third-Party, Fire & Theft Car Insurance?

Third-Party, Fire & Theft Cover is our mid-range option between Comprehensive and Third-Party Only. Even though the name says it all, let’s take a look in detail what you’re covered for when you take out this type of insurance.

Third-Party Cover

When two or more cars are involved in an accident, most of the time one of the drivers is at fault. If that happens to be you, the other driver(s) can hold you legally liable for the damage you cause to their car, and any of their belongings. Depending on the severity of the accident, you might be ordered to pay up to millions in damages to the other drivers.

Because almost no one has that kind of money lying around, we offer third-party cover. Up to a specified limit, we will cover the damage to repair the other person’s property, as well as any damages awarded against you in a legal case.

Fire Cover

Fire might seem like quite a specific risk to insure against, but there are many ways this peril can affect your car.

Whether your car itself ignites, you have a fire in the home that spreads to your vehicle, or a blaze in the veld spreads to your property, we will cover the cost of repairing or replacing your car if it’s damaged by fire.

Theft Cover

In South Africa, vehicle theft cover is a must-have. Without insurance, if your car is stolen, you’ll have to keep paying it off even though it’s in the hands of a criminal. We will pay you out for your car so you can pay off what you still owe on it and possibly even put a deposit down on a new car. Get a car insurance quote online with us today!

Frequently asked questions

Is Third-Party, Fire & Theft Cover right for me?

Comprehensive Car Insurance is the best option for newer, more expensive cars. Third-Party Only Car Insurance is ideal for low value cars that are already paid off. Third-Party, Fire & Theft Cover is for cars between these two options. It’s perfect for older cars that won’t be devalued too much if they get a few scrapes. But if you still need your car every day and can’t afford to do without it, the theft cover included in this type of car cover makes it perfect for you.

Do I really need cover against fire?

It might seem unlikely that your car will ever be on fire, but cars contain a lot of flammable materials. Think of the fuel, upholstery, and oil. Even though most vehicle fires progress quite slowly, there are plenty of chances for a fire in or near to a car to do serious damage. Add to that the chances of a mechanical or electrical fault in a car increasing as the car gets older, and a little leaking fluid can lead to a great big blaze.

What isn’t covered under Third-Party, Fire & Theft Car Insurance?

The main difference between Third-Party, Fire & Theft Car Insurance and Comprehensive Car Insurance is that the former doesn’t cover accidental damage to your own car. This means that if you are in an accident, you’ll have to pay to repair your car from your own pocket. You should know that if you’re in an accident that isn’t your fault and you have Third-Party, Fire & Theft Cover, you can still claim from the person who caused the accident for the damage to your car.

It’s also worth noting –  as with all of our Car Insurance policies, you aren’t covered if you don’t lock your car and your car is stolen. So be on the lookout for remote jamming when you visit the shops.

Am I covered for damage caused by attempted theft of my car?

Yes. We cover theft as well as damage caused to your car if a criminal tries to break in. This includes cover for your windows if they’re smashed and car locks if they are broken. Your car may even be damaged in an attempted hijacking. If this is the case, we know it can be expensive to repair the damage, so it’s on us.

Who are the first, second-, and third-parties?

We refer to third-parties when we talk about an accident that was your fault. But what do we even mean by this? Let’s break it down for you:

  • First-party: This is you, the person with the Budget Third-Party, Fire & Theft Insurance.

  • Second-party: This is us, your friendly neighbourhood insurance company.

Third-party: This is the person whose vehicle you’ve damaged in the accident. They lodge the insurance claim against you and that’s when you’ll need third-party cover.
