According to Koeksister Queen, Elsa-Marie, you don’t need to blow your budget on Easter. She knows how to cater for hungry firemen… and hungry family and friends. We asked her to share some hosting hacks for all our Bozzas. She kicked off immediately with dessert! So, these saving tips start with the sweet stuff first!
Value-Pack Easter Egg Hunt – Get a value pack of marshmallow easter eggs and hide them around the garden and house for the kids to find. Be creative with your hiding places! The kids can eat one each. And the rest are used for savings tip number 2…
South African S’mors – pop those marshmallow eggs between hot cross buns, wrap them in foil and stick them on the braai, for a melt-in-your-mouth surprise.
Koeksisters of course – according to Elsa-Marie, “you can never go wrong with koeksisters!” While she likes her koeksisters home-baked, store bought ones can be just as good, and they’re a good price too!
Moving swiftly onto mains:
“Roast leg of lamb is lekker but shoo it’s expensive!” says Elsa-Marie. She did some research and found some wonderful Officially South African alternatives:
Lamb potjie – add loads of veggies like potatoes, carrots and celery.
Lamb shins and dumplings – this is also known as Inyama namadombolo and makes for a hearty meal!
Neck of lamb or lamb ribs – both of these are cost-effective alternatives to leg of lamb and can be prepared in various ways.
Roast chicken – ditch the lamb altogether and go with roast chicken instead!
We reminded Elsa-Marie about starters. “Ag ja, of course, how could I forget!” she said and went on to share some great ideas:
Creamy chicken livers – these are very affordable and are quick and easy to cook. Serve them with hot rolls or dumplings to soak up the delicious sauce.
Pickled fish – frozen hake is the most affordable choice for this dish. “The more flavour the better!” says Elsa-Marie, “use plenty onions and spices!”
Mini bunny chow – now this one is perfect for easter! Fill mini bread loaves with Cape Malay curry, another classic easter recipe.
And to drink? Elsa-Marie brings more than enough life to any party, so she opts to serve mocktails. Here are some of her budget-friendly favourites:
Homemade Ginger Beer: mix ground ginger with water and lemonade for a flavourful fizz!
Cran-Beer Cooler: mix apple cider, cranberry juice, ginger beer, and orange juice concentrate.
Lemon Mint Twist: blend lemon syrup, sparkling water and mint. Add crushed ice to make a lekker crusher!
Punch Power: mix fruit juice and ginger beer and add sliced oranges.
“So, there you have it! Everything you need for an easy easter lunch, that won’t burn down the bank!” concludes Elsa-Marie. (We’re pretty sure she meant “break the bank”) We hope that her helpful hacks come in useful and that you have an eggcellent easter!
