What is Trailer Insurance?

Do you take everything you possibly can with you when you go away on holiday? Is your trailer a multi-wheeled member of the family? Your trailer carries a lot when you hit the road and allows your road trip to be comfy and spacious. But it also brings its own set of risks. Aside from it being a valuable asset, driving with a trailer is tricky. It requires a lot more concentration and increases your risk on the road. It just makes sense to insure your trailer for a range of risks. As a trailer insurance company, that’s exactly what we do.

Comprehensive Trailer Insurance

Our Trailer Insurance offers comprehensive cover, meaning you get full cover for loss, theft, and damage, such as from an accident, or a fire or explosion. You’re also covered for third-party damage.

The coverage limits for these are as follows:

  • Fire and explosion: R300 000

  • Third-party damage: R1 million

If your trailer is in an accident and you can’t tow it, we’ll tow it to the nearest repairer, or to the nearest vehicle storage facility and cover the cost of this. Just remember to call our towline number straight away so we can make sure the right person arrives to take it away.

And remember, it’s important to cover your trailer all year round, not just when you go on holiday because a number of things could happen to it while it’s not being used.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vehicles are classified as trailers?

A trailer is an unpowered vehicle that is towed by another vehicle on the road. This could be your standard household trailer or a custom trailer made to carry items like jet-skis or bikes. Either way, trailers are designed to haul items from one place to another – usually from your home to your holiday accommodation and back again.

Does your Trailer Insurance also cover the valuables inside?

Our Trailer Insurance only includes cover for the trailer itself and any third-party damage caused by it. We don’t insure the valuables you keep inside it. Luckily, it’s easy to get cover for the goodies that make your holiday a pleasure; you can take out a Portable Possessions Insurance policy with us and specify which items you’d like to cover. From your cutlery to your holiday book collection to your swimming gear.

What isn’t covered under your Trailer Insurance?

While our Trailer Insurance is comprehensive, it doesn’t cover your trailer if you use it to generate an income; it’s only covered if you use it for personal use. It also needs to be in a roadworthy condition at all times (even if it’s just gathering dust in the garage) and whoever is towing it must have a valid driver’s licence. It also goes without saying that the driver towing it must remain sober at all times, otherwise we will reject a claim. Finally, we only offer Trailer Insurance in South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe. If you tow your trailer to any other country aside from these, it won’t be covered.

How do I lower my Trailer Insurance premiums?

There are loads of ways to lower your Trailer Insurance premiums. Similarly, try to claim as seldom as possible. The more you claim, the more it drives up your premiums.

Does your Trailer Insurance cover wear and tear?

Insurance is made to cover the unexpected, like unforeseen accidents, theft, or even natural disasters. Because wear and tear are expected to happen over time, we don’t cover it. That means you need to replace your trailer’s tyres regularly, ensure it seals properly to prevent damp problems, and change the light bulbs when they go out. But if you accidentally hit a lamp post while reversing (because towing a trailer is tricky!), we’ll cover the cost to repair the damage.
