4x4 Insurance

To make sure you’re getting the right cover for your vehicle, it’s important to know what types of cars qualify as 4x4 or off-road vehicles. We consider any four-wheeled vehicle that has four-wheel driving, dune driving, and trail driving capabilities to be a 4x4 vehicle. Basically, if it can handle terrain that isn’t a private or public graded road, it will probably be covered under our Off-Road Insurance.

We’ll cover your 4x4 in certain countries outside of South Africa for theft, accidental damage, third-party liability. Basically, you can still enjoy all the same comprehensive cover while you’re exploring the rest of the continent. The countries outside South Africa you’re still covered in are Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. However, note that we don’t offer Accident or Breakdown Assistance outside of South Africa. 

4x4 insurance is almost always more expensive than standard car insurance. This is for a number of reasons. 4x4 vehicles are more likely to be driven off-road, making them more prone to accidental damage. Also, because off-road vehicles are bigger and heavier, they’re likely to do more damage to a third-party’s property in an accident. In addition, 4x4 insurance in South Africa must factor in the higher risk of theft for these kinds of vehicles. Finally, off-road vehicles often have high-end specs, which makes them more expensive to repair if they’re in an accident.

There are a few instances where we won’t insure your 4x4. For example, if you drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, we won’t payout if you have an accident. Similarly, you must have a valid driver’s licence to use your off-road vehicle and it must be in a roadworthy condition. We also only insure 4x4s used for pleasure and domestic purposes. So if you use it for business, such as by hiring it out, you’ll need to take out business insurance.

We cover a number of standard accessories under our Off-Road Insurance. These include tyres, the spare wheel if it’s stolen with the vehicle, factory-fitted cellphone car kit, windscreen, bumpers, and more.

The sound system is not included in the standard fittings and accessories we cover. However, you can add this to your policy for a small additional monthly fee. You can also add the vehicle’s canopy and spare wheel to your plan.
